Tesla Considering Opening Superchargers To Other Automakers

While certain states across the country are trying their best to prevent Tesla from selling their cars within their borders, Tesla themselves are busy expanding their supercharging network, even potentially opening the network to other automakers.

One of the biggest reasons to choose a Tesla over other electric vehicles is access to the ever growing Supercharger network across the country, which uses a proprietary charging port. At the 28th Annual Energy Fair in Wisconsin, Tesla CTO JB Straubel made a comment about sharing the supercharging network, which is actually not the first time the idea has come up.

“For things like Supercharger, we are actively talking to other car makers and we are trying to figure out a structure to work with them.”

With no concrete details from Tesla or other manufacturers, however, all of this is purely speculation. Opening up the Supercharger network to additional EVs like the Bolt, Nissan Leaf, or any upcoming EV from the likes of Porsche and Audi could potentially bring in revenue if Tesla charges other carmakers to use the network.

However, Supercharger locations already suffer from congestion issues, with many stations dealing with long lines. While Tesla plans to double the number of supercharging stations worldwide this year, that will most likely be a move to balance out the influx of new Model 3s as opposed to outside cars.

It could easily become a pretty hairy situation if the already clogged Supercharger lines now have to deal with a bunch of Leafs and Bolts making the wait even longer. In the meantime, we’ll keep an eye out for any additional new regarding opening up Superchargers to other manufacturers!
