Tesla Interested in Starting Music Streaming Service

As if running Tesla, SpaceX, the Boring Company, and SolarCity weren’t enough, Elon Musk has another project he wants to get started: a music streaming service. Because why not? Honestly, of all the things I could have guessed for Elon Musk to take an interest in, a music streaming service was pretty low on my list of potentials.

Sources in the music industry have stated that Elon Musk has had talks with all the major record labels about licensing a proprietary music service that would come equipped with Tesla cars. But wait, you might be wondering, what about existing services like Spotify or Apple Music? You know, the ones that you likely already have and can just plug a phone in to work?

A Tesla spokesperson has an answer to that:

“We believe it’s important to have an exceptional in-car experience so our customers can listen to the music they want from whatever source they choose. Our goal is to simply achieve maximum happiness for our customers.”

Music labels, however, have an opportunity to reach a pretty large user base with a Tesla specific streaming service. Tesla delivered 100,000 cars in January and has taken 400,000 preorders for the upcoming Model 3. That’s not including the number of Model 3s Tesla intends to keep churning out in the following years, on top of continuing Model X and S sales and future vehicles.

Maybe this isn’t such a crazy idea?
