Nissan first showed off its Ariya electric crossover as a concept at the 2019 Tokyo Motor show. Of course much has changed with the design to make it more practical since that showing. Although, according to a new teaser image, the production Ariya may be closer than we’d expect to the concept.
Nissan went with the dark and mysterious “blacked out except the headlights” approach, so typical of car teaser images. From the silhouette, we can see that the Ariya keeps the general proportions of its predecessor, and follows the Nissan design language.
For those of us familiar with the Rogue and Leaf, the Ariya crossover will look like an updated amalgamation of the two recognizable vehicles. Nissan has been actively trying to move towards a more premium market, the Ariya will usher in this change for their EVs.
The world is looking for a leap forward. The Ariya Concept answered the call with its rethinking of the crossover segment from the ground up, including striking design features, interior amenities and space, and sports car-like performance Even a conventional element like the traditional front grille has evolved into a stunning ‘shield’ to protect important technology used for the latest ProPilot driver assistance.
Not only will the Ariya feature Nissan’s ProPilot driving assist, which takes over steering and speed for motorways, but also their new drivetrain system. The E-4orce platform, which has recently been shown off with Leaf EVs, combines two electric motors, one on each axle, for AWD.
E-4orce isn’t just better for handling and performance, it has actually been tailored by Nissan engineers to help with driver comfort, reducing back-and-forth motion as vehicles accelerate.
Nissan has set July as the month that the world will finally get to see their new flagship EV, until then, these dark pics will just have to do.
