Watch How You Shift From Drive To Reverse In New Tesla Model S And X

Tesla has recently refreshed both the Model S and Model X, and it’s quite an overhaul, especially inside the car. Not only has the steering wheel been replaced with a yoke, but the lever used to change the car from drive to reverse and back again has also been completely removed. So how do you control which direction the car drives in? Well, it turns out there are a few ways it can happen.

The cars are said to be able to intelligently select drive or reverse depending on the environment around them. Tesla is calling it “smart shift”, which uses Autopilot sensors, AI, and GPS to select the gear for the driver.

Electrek obtained a document from Tesla which discusses this in more detail:

The vehicle uses its Autopilot sensors to intelligently and automatically determine intended drive modes and select them. For example, if the front of Model S/X is facing a garage wall, it will detect this and automatically shift to Reverse once the driver presses the brake pedal. This eliminates one more step for the drivers of the world’s most intelligent production cars.

There is also a way you can change the gear manually through the touch screen. A video has been found on Twitter which shows someone sliding the outline of the Tesla upwards and downwards on the left side of the screen to select forward or reverse gears.

In January, Tesla explained that they’d add a way to manually change gears via force touch buttons found on the centre console, but now we’re seeing more and more spy shots of the car, we’re not sure this is correct with only a handful of cars spotted having these available.

We’re sure Tesla has plenty of thinking left to do on how they want to do this, but either way, the removal of the stalk has got owners and fans talking. Watch this space.
