Mazda MX-30 EV Starts Production, A First For The Company
This week, Mazda started up production of their first-ever electric vehicle, the MX-30 at their Ujina plant in Hiroshima, Japan. The cool little car comes with suicide doors, and will mark the beginning of a new era for Mazda.
The crossover, about the size of Mazda’s CX-3, will come with a single front-motor producing 143 horsepower, that will get 200 km (124 miles) of range out of its 35.5 kWh battery.
Mazda is calling the layout of this powertrain their “e-Skyativ1,” which is a properly silly name. However, the powertrain will be in every single one of their cars by 2030, according to Mazda.
By 2030, every car we make will feature our e-SkyActive electric-drive technology as we work to reduce CO2 emission.
DC charging will be a possibility with this system, and at up to 50kW, drivers will be able to get from 0% to 80% in around 40 minutes. With AC charging at up to 6.6kW, it will also have the option of charging at lower speeds in more places, thru both CHAdeMO and/or CCS standards depending on locality.
The MX-30 can be pre-ordered through Mazda currently, with a starting price of $35,000, it will be arriving in European dealerships in the Fall.
Additionally, Mazda states that they are developing a rotary-motor equipped version of the MX-30, which will be a plug-in hybrid version of the EV intended to extend range.
