Space X and US Military To Begin Project In August

“To infinity and beyond!” seems much closer to reality than it was when Toy Story first premiered in 1995. Elon Musk’s SpaceX program has been doing work with NASA, and now SpaceX will join the US military.

This August, SpaceX will partner with the military for the second time when it will carry the X-37B spy craft, into space. The X-37B is an unmanned miniature versions fo the Space Shuttle and logs mission that are well over a year in length. The first X-37B mission lasted over 700 days orbiting the Earth.

The August launch went to Elon Musks’s company mainly due to cost; launches start around $61 million through SpaceX, and the lower cost has allowed Musk’s company to undercut its chief rival: United Launch Alliance.

United Launch Alliance is a subsidiary of Boeing Co. and Lockheed Martin Corp., and they are no stranger to space launches; the company has had over 100 launches on record. However, lauches through ULA still sit at over $100 million, a number which ULA plans to lower by 2019.

Perhaps more interesting was a tweet from ULA’s president and chief executive Salvatore “Tory” Bruno last Friday:

SpaceX’s partnership with the military gives it a huge new source of income, something Musk will need if he still plans to fly two private space tourists around the moon by 2018.
