Tesla Is Trying To Change The Law To Give The Semi The Edge Over Competition
With the Tesla Semi looking to be a powerful instrument in the company’s portfolio of EVs, it’s no surprise that CEO Elon Musk and his team are looking at every way possible they can increase the income and efficiency of the all-electric truck. Today, it’s been revealed that they’re trying to change a law that would give Tesla logistics a serious advantage over its ICE counterparts.
In a number of European countries, there’s a ban on vehicles over 7.5 tons and trailers between 00:00 and 22:00 on Sundays and public holidays. This is down to these vehicles producing noise pollution and emissions. But as the Tesla Semi produces none of these, Tesla is arguing that they should be exempt from this law.
However, since the law doesn’t differentiate between different types of powertrains, the law will have to be amended to reflect this.
Business Insider Germany reported that Tesla has attempted to change this via the German government:
“According to research by Business Insider, a Tesla delegation traveled to Berlin on Thursday last week and met for a confidential discussion with the Parliamentary State Secretary at the BMVI, Steffen Bilger. The meeting was about everything. At some point, however, the company representatives turned the conversation to electric trucks and called for a spectacular change in the law: The new, environmentally friendly generation of trucks should be exempted from the Sunday driving ban. The regulation that allows drivers to not be slowed down by truck columns at least one day a week.”
The Federal Ministry of Transport confirmed this and that they are looking into the change of law.
“During a conversation at the BMVI with Mr. PSts Bilger and representatives from Tesla, options for strengthening sustainable modern mobility were discussed, especially with regard to the logistics area.”
Tesla is looking to produce the truck in “limited volumes” beginning this year after pushing it back from 2019. We can’t wait to see more of these behemoths on the road.
